Fortescue Metals Group - Machinery Facility

The HUIS Group were engaged by a private developer to undertake the construction of a 20,000 m² machinery storage facility for Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) in Port Hedland, Western Australia. This large-scale industrial project was designed to accommodate FMG’s need for a robust and spacious facility capable of housing oversized mining equipment critical to their operations in the resource-rich Pilbara region.

Project Overview

The facility was purpose-built to store and protect extremely large-scale mining equipment, requiring a highly specialized structural design to meet the demanding operational and environmental conditions of Port Hedland. The harsh climate, characterized by extreme heat, dust, and cyclonic conditions, necessitated a resilient and durable construction approach. The HUIS Group delivered a tailored solution that integrated advanced engineering with high-quality materials to ensure the facility’s longevity and functionality.

Structural Steel Supply and Oversight

The HUIS Group took full responsibility for the supply, fabrication, and installation of all structural steel components for the project, ensuring seamless integration with the facility’s precast tilt-up panel system. This comprehensive oversight included:

  • Design and Engineering: HUIS Group worked closely with structural engineers and architects to develop a design that incorporated over 20-meter-long structural steel members. These large-scale components were essential to support the expansive roof spans and provide the necessary clearance for housing oversized mining equipment, such as heavy-duty haul trucks and excavators.
  • Steel Fabrication and Quality Control: HUIS Groups robust and technological advanced QAQC process was integrated into the project managing the entire structural steel supply from end to end meeting the project’s stringent specifications. Each steel member was precision-engineered to withstand the heavy loads and environmental stresses of the region. Rigorous quality control measures were implemented at every stage, from material selection to fabrication, ensuring compliance with Australian standards and FMG’s operational requirements and advanced steel sequencing allowed for onsite assembly efficiency.
  • Logistics and Supply Chain Management: Given the remote location of Port Hedland, HUIS Group coordinated the complex logistics of transporting large structural steel components to the site. This involved meticulous planning to ensure timely delivery while minimizing disruptions to the project timeline. Our team leveraged their expertise in supply chain management to overcome challenges posed by the region’s isolation and limited infrastructure.
  • Installation and Integration: The installation of the structural steel framework was a critical phase of the project, requiring precise execution to align with the precast tilt-up concrete panels. HUIS Group’s experienced on-site team utilized advanced construction techniques to erect the steel members, ensuring structural integrity and seamless integration with the precast panels. This hybrid construction approach created a robust, weather-resistant envelope capable of protecting FMG’s valuable equipment.

Key Features and Challenges

The facility’s design incorporated several innovative features to meet FMG’s operational needs:

  • Large-Scale Structural Members: The use of 20+ meter-long steel beams allowed for expansive internal clearances, accommodating the storage of oversized mining equipment without compromising structural stability.
  • Precast Tilt-Up Panelling: The integration of precast concrete panels with the steel framework provided a cost-effective and durable solution, enhancing the facility’s resistance to environmental factors such as dust and high winds.
  • Cyclonic Design Standards: The facility was engineered to comply with cyclonic design requirements, ensuring resilience against extreme weather events common in the Pilbara region.

The project presented several challenges, including the remote location, tight timelines, and the need for specialized materials. HUIS Group’s expertise in project management, coupled with our ability to oversee the entire structural steel supply chain, ensured that these challenges were met with innovative solutions and meticulous planning.
